Advanced Studies: Institute of Piano

The Institute of Piano Studies is a premier advanced preparatory program designed for serious, committed piano students. Our program guides students through high-level technical training, competition preparation, and comprehensive musicianship studies, including theory and aural skills. In addition to weekly instruction, students participate in master classes and studio classes that foster artistic growth, performance experience, and professional discipline. Because of the rigorous nature of the program, longer lesson times and consistent, focused practice are required. The Institute of Piano Studies also provides dedicated preparation for college and conservatory auditions, equipping students with the skills, confidence, and artistic foundation needed to succeed at the highest level.
Vision
Rufus Choi - Founder
My teaching philosophy is rooted in a continuous artistic cycle that transforms music into a living experience of connection between mind, body, and spirit. First, the mind imagines — the creation of feeling — the originating emotional impulse — and from it the inner hearing of sound, the essence through which that feeling takes form in beauty, color, and expressive intention. Second is physical realization — the technical and mechanical means required to bring that imagined sound into the world. Third is listening — a heightened awareness to truly hear the result, to discern what is present and meaningful, to understand what to listen for, and to recognize what is absent or in need of refinement. From that awareness, the cycle continues, deepening understanding and expression with each return.
While much emphasis in instrumental training is placed at the moment of physical execution, the true substance of music lies in the resonance of sound that follows — the living vibration in the air. Therefore, listening must guide us, and our physical mechanics exist to serve the sound we want to bring into being.
Central to my teaching is the direction of energy. The physical nature of the piano often encourages compression and tension, but the mind and spirit move differently — they radiate outward. Our sound must reflect that same radiant flow of energy. When imagination, physical expression, and listening align with this outward flow, music becomes more than correct performance — it becomes an undeniable and deeply compelling experience.
